Objectives and Process of the Special Intensive Revision

The primary goal of the SIR is to ensure that electoral rolls are accurate and up-to-date by removing ineligible voters and adding eligible ones. Key features of this exercise include:

  • Door-to-door verification conducted by Booth Level Officers (BLOs).
  • Utilization of digital tools and biometric validation for de-duplication.
  • Incorporation of Aadhaar as the 12th proof of identity, though not as proof of citizenship or domicile.
  • Allowance for claims and objections even after the final publication of the rolls.

The nationwide SIR follows the successful implementation of a similar exercise in Bihar, where approximately 6.9 million names were removed from voter lists due to deaths, duplicates, and ineligible entries.

Upcoming Elections and Voter Registration Drives

In anticipation of upcoming elections, various states have announced voter registration schedules. For instance, the State Election Commission has set the following timeline for graduate and teacher constituencies elections:

  • Official notification release: September 30, 2025
  • Publication in newspapers: October 15, 2025
  • Start of voter registration: November 1, 2025
  • Objection period: November 25 to December 10, 2025
  • Final voter list publication: December 30, 2025

Political parties are actively gearing up for these elections, focusing on mobilizing eligible voters to register and participate.

Recent Voter Turnout Statistics

Recent elections have showcased varying voter turnout rates across the country. Notably:

  • In the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections held on February 5, 2025, the overall voter turnout was 60.54%. The North East district recorded the highest turnout at 66.25%, while the New Delhi district had the lowest at 57.23%.
  • The 2024 Lok Sabha elections saw a voter turnout of 65.79%, excluding postal ballots. This was a slight decrease from the 67.40% turnout in the 2019 parliamentary polls.
