Former Major League Baseball catcher Jesús Montero has died at age 35 following a motorcycle accident in Venezuela, officials announced Sunday. Montero, who played for the New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners during his five-season MLB career, had been hospitalized in critical condition since the October 4 crash and was unable to recover from multiple injuries[1].
The accident occurred when Montero’s motorcycle collided with a truck in Venezuela. He remained in critical condition for two weeks before succumbing to his injuries on October 19, 2025[2]. The tragic news shocked the baseball community across South America, with numerous tributes posted on social media honoring the Venezuelan player’s legacy.
Montero made his Major League debut with the Yankees in 2011, playing 18 games that season before being traded to Seattle. He spent the majority of his MLB career with the Mariners, appearing in 208 games from 2012 to 2015[1]. One of his most memorable moments came on June 8, 2012, when he served as the catcher during a historic game in which six Seattle pitchers combined to throw a no-hitter against the Los Angeles Dodgers[2].
Over his brief major league career, Montero compiled a .253 batting average with 28 home runs and 104 RBIs[1]. His career was marked by both promise and controversy, including two suspensions for violating anti-doping regulations—a 50-game ban in 2013 and another 50-game suspension in 2016 while in the Toronto Blue Jays’ minor league system after testing positive for dimethyl butylamine, a stimulant used to combat fatigue[1].
The Venezuelan Professional Baseball League released a statement honoring Montero’s contributions to the sport: “Venezuelan baseball sadly bids farewell to Jesús Montero … leaving behind a legacy of effort and passion for the game. Today, baseball mourns his passing. But it also remembers him with gratitude: for every home run that thrilled the fans, for every day in which he proudly defended his country’s colors, and for every young person who saw in him an example that dreams can be achieved”[1].
Following his MLB career, Montero played six seasons in the Venezuelan Winter League with the Navegantes del Magallanes, Cardenales de Lara, and Águilas del Zulia before retiring at age 31 after the 2020-2021 season[1]. The Seattle Mariners released a statement expressing their condolences: “The Mariners were saddened to learn today of the passing of former Mariners player Jesús Montero. Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and loved ones”[2].
