Season-Ending Injuries to Key Players

On August 7, 2025, Pro Bowl left tackle Rashawn Slater suffered a torn patellar tendon during practice, sidelining him for the entire season. Slater had recently signed a four-year, $114 million contract extension in July, securing his position with the Chargers through the 2029 season.

In Slater’s absence, rookie offensive tackle Joe Alt stepped in to fill the critical left tackle role. However, Alt’s tenure was cut short when he sustained a right ankle injury during the Chargers’ 27-20 victory over the Tennessee Titans on November 2, 2025. The injury occurred in the first half of the game following a collision with Titans’ defensive lineman Sebastian Joseph-Day. Alt is scheduled to undergo season-ending surgery, further depleting the Chargers’ offensive line.

Acquisition of Trevor Penning

In response to these injuries, the Chargers acquired offensive lineman Trevor Penning from the New Orleans Saints on November 4, 2025. Penning, a former first-round draft pick in 2022, has experience playing both tackle and guard positions. The trade involved the Chargers sending a 2027 sixth-round draft pick to the Saints.
