Norwegian Foreign Minister Calls for Progress in Gaza Amidst Ongoing Crisis
Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide has emphasized the urgent need for forward movement in addressing the humanitarian and political crisis in Gaza. In a statement released on November 29, 2025, Eide highlighted the severe toll the conflict has taken on civilians and called for intensified international efforts to achieve a lasting peace.
Humanitarian Concerns and International Response
Over the past two years, more than 67,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, with millions displaced and infrastructure severely damaged. Eide described the situation as “immense suffering” and stressed the importance of the international community uniting to end the war and secure a lasting political solution. He reiterated Norway’s commitment to supporting the Palestinian people and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
Norway’s Diplomatic Efforts and Challenges
Norway has been actively involved in diplomatic efforts to address the Gaza crisis. In May 2024, Norway formally recognized the Palestinian state, a move that was met with strong opposition from Israel. Subsequently, in August 2024, Israel revoked the diplomatic status of Norwegian envoys to the Palestinian Authority, a decision Eide labeled as “extreme and unreasonable.” Despite these challenges, Norway has continued to advocate for a two-state solution and has provided significant financial support to Palestine, including a contribution of 200 million Norwegian kroner in July 2025 to prevent the collapse of essential public services.
Call for International Action
Eide’s recent statements underscore the necessity for the international community to take decisive action in addressing the Gaza crisis. He emphasized that the current fragile ceasefire offers a “glimmer of hope” but warned that sustained international engagement is crucial to translate this into a sustainable peace. Norway remains committed to contributing to efforts that aim to end the conflict and support the establishment of a Palestinian state.
