Palestinians Endure Harsh Winter Rains Amid Gaza Shelter Supply Blockade
As the first heavy rains of the season swept through the Gaza Strip on November 15, 2025, thousands of displaced Palestinians found their makeshift shelters inundated, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis. The Muwasi tent camp, home to over 425,000 individuals displaced by two years of conflict, bore the brunt of the storm, with tents collapsing under the weight of the rain and personal belongings destroyed.
Severe Weather Exposes Shelter Deficiencies
Residents of the Muwasi camp attempted to mitigate the flooding by digging trenches around their tents. However, the lack of proper drainage and infrastructure rendered these efforts largely ineffective. Many families, having purchased new tents at significant expense, discovered that the structures were insufficient to withstand the storm. The combination of heavy rainfall and strong winds not only damaged shelters but also hampered access to essential supplies.
Humanitarian Aid Blocked Amid Growing Needs
Despite a ceasefire agreement in place since October 10, 2025, Israeli authorities have continued to block the entry of critical shelter materials into Gaza. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) reported that shelter supplies intended for up to 1.3 million Palestinians remain stored in warehouses in Jordan and Egypt, awaiting permission to enter the territory. This blockade has left approximately 260,000 Palestinian families, nearly 1.5 million people, vulnerable to the harsh winter conditions without adequate protection.
International Calls for Immediate Action
Humanitarian organizations have issued urgent appeals for the lifting of restrictions on aid deliveries. Angelita Caredda, Middle East and North Africa Regional Director for the Norwegian Refugee Council, emphasized the critical nature of the situation, stating, “We have a very short chance to protect families from the winter rains and cold.” The UNRWA echoed this sentiment, highlighting that the winter rains are making conditions “ever more desperate” for displaced families seeking shelter in makeshift tents.
The ongoing blockade and severe weather conditions have compounded the suffering of Gaza’s population, underscoring the urgent need for unimpeded humanitarian assistance to prevent further deterioration of the humanitarian situation in the region.
