Scott Bakula Returns to the Stage in ‘The Baker’s Wife’ Off-Broadway
Veteran actor Scott Bakula is set to star in the upcoming Off-Broadway production of “The Baker’s Wife” at the Classic Stage Company in New York City. The musical, featuring a book by Joseph Stein and music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, will run from October 23 to December 21, 2025, with an official opening night on November 11.
A Reunion with a Cherished Role
Bakula’s connection to “The Baker’s Wife” dates back to 1980 when he portrayed the character Dominique in a production at the Cincinnati Playhouse. Now, over four decades later, he returns to the musical, this time taking on the lead role of Aimable Castagnet, a kindhearted baker whose arrival, alongside his younger wife Geneviève, disrupts the harmony of a small French village.
Reflecting on his return to the show, Bakula shared, “This show has been with me since 1980. I did a different part then, a long time ago, and I have grown and matured into this role. To have the show finally here in New York, with this cast and with Ariana DeBose, it’s just fantastic. The space at Classic Stage is going to be perfect for it.”
Collaborating with Ariana DeBose
Joining Bakula in this production is Academy Award winner Ariana DeBose, who will play Geneviève. Their on-stage partnership is anticipated to bring a fresh dynamic to the musical, which explores themes of love, jealousy, and redemption in a quaint French village setting.
A Return to Theatrical Roots
While Bakula is widely recognized for his television roles in “Quantum Leap,” “Star Trek: Enterprise,” and “NCIS: New Orleans,” he has a rich history in theater. He made his Broadway debut in 1983 as Joe DiMaggio in “Marilyn: An American Fable” and earned a Tony nomination in 1988 for his role in “Romance/Romance.” His recent stage work includes starring in the Off-Broadway musical “The Connector” in early 2024 and portraying Abraham Lincoln in “Mister Lincoln” at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C., in September 2024.
Expressing his passion for theater, Bakula stated, “Putting a show together is the best time in the theater. You get to explore, meet people for the first time, and create something together. There’s really nothing like it.”
