United Arab Emirates (UAE) cricket captain Muhammad Waseem has recently made headlines in India for his remarkable performances and candid statements during the Asia Cup 2025.
Historic Milestone in T20I Cricket
On September 15, 2025, during the Asia Cup match against Oman in Abu Dhabi, Waseem became the first UAE player and the 11th overall to surpass 3,000 runs in T20 International cricket. He achieved this feat in just 1,947 balls, making him the third-fastest batter to reach this milestone, trailing only behind Pakistan’s Babar Azam and India’s Virat Kohli. In that match, Waseem scored a solid 69 runs off 54 balls, including six fours and three sixes, at a strike rate of 127.77.
Leadership in the Asia Cup
Waseem led the UAE squad in the Asia Cup 2025, which commenced on September 9. The team faced India in their opening game at the Dubai International Stadium on September 10. Prior to the match, Waseem downplayed the significance of facing India, stating, “We won’t consider this a big match because all teams are good, so all matches will be the same.” However, the UAE suffered a heavy defeat, with India securing a nine-wicket victory. This statement drew attention and was widely discussed in the media.
Team Unity Amidst Regional Tensions
Despite the geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan, Waseem emphasized the unity within the UAE team, which comprises players of both Indian and Pakistani origin. He stated, “We are like a family here. There is no Indian and no Pakistani. We play for the UAE team. We play as a family and live as a family.” This sentiment highlights the camaraderie and cohesion within the team, transcending national differences.
Waseem’s achievements and statements have resonated in the Indian cricket community, showcasing his prowess on the field and his leadership off it.
