UNC Men’s Basketball Prepares for 2025–26 Season with Revamped Roster
The University of North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball team is gearing up for the 2025–26 season under the leadership of head coach Hubert Davis, now in his fifth year at the helm. Following a challenging 2024–25 season that concluded with a 19–14 overall record and a 9–11 mark in ACC play, the team has undergone significant changes to its roster and coaching staff.
Offseason Departures and Additions
The Tar Heels experienced substantial turnover during the offseason. Key departures include veteran guard RJ Davis and forward Jae’Lyn Withers, both of whom graduated. Additionally, several players entered the transfer portal, notably Elliot Cadeau, Ian Jackson, Jalen Washington, and Ven-Allen Lubin. Freshman standout Drake Powell declared for the 2025 NBA Draft, leaving a void in the team’s lineup.
In response, UNC actively pursued talent through the transfer portal and international signings. Notable additions include 7-foot center Henri Veesaar from Arizona, forward Jarin Stevenson from Alabama, and guard Kyan Evans from Colorado State. The team also secured commitments from wing shooter Jonathan Powell from West Virginia and international guard Luka Bogavac from Montenegro. Complementing these transfers are incoming freshmen, most prominently five-star forward Caleb Wilson, along with guards Derek Dixon and Isiah Denis.
Preseason Preparations and Outlook
With the roster now finalized, Coach Davis is emphasizing team chemistry and player development. The Tar Heels are set to embark on an overseas tour in Italy this August, providing an opportunity for the new lineup to gel ahead of the competitive season. Returning guard Seth Trimble, one of the few holdovers from the previous season, is expected to play a pivotal role in guiding the team through this transitional period.
The coaching staff has also seen adjustments, with Jeff Lebo, Sean May, and Brad Frederick continuing their roles as assistant coaches. The collective experience of the coaching team is anticipated to be instrumental in integrating the new players and implementing strategic adjustments.
As the Tar Heels prepare for the upcoming season, the focus remains on building a cohesive unit capable of competing at the highest level in the ACC and making a significant impact in the NCAA Tournament.
