United States Experiences Record-Breaking Tornado Activity in 2025
As of October 26, 2025, the United States has recorded an unprecedented 1,283 confirmed tornadoes, marking the most active tornado season since 2011. This figure surpasses the annual average of approximately 1,200 tornadoes, highlighting a significant increase in severe weather events this year.
Notable Tornado Events in 2025
Several significant tornado outbreaks have contributed to this record-breaking season. From March 13 to 16, a widespread and deadly outbreak affected much of the Midwestern and Eastern United States. This event produced 118 tornadoes, setting a new record for the largest outbreak in March. The most intense tornado during this period was an EF4 with winds reaching 190 mph in Diaz, Arkansas.
Another major event occurred on April 2, when severe thunderstorms erupted across the Mississippi and Ohio River valleys. These storms produced multiple tornadoes, including an EF1 in Vernon County, Missouri, which remained on the ground for nearly 17 miles with peak winds up to 98 mph, leaving thousands without power.

In response to the heightened tornado activity, the Tornado Observation Research Notification and Deployment to Operations (TORNADO) Act was introduced in April 2023.
