Glenn Maxwell Returns to Australia’s T20I Squad for India Series

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has been named in the national squad for the final three T20 International matches against India, marking his return after a series of injuries earlier this year.

Injury Setbacks and Recovery

Maxwell’s 2025 season was marred by injuries. In April, during the Indian Premier League (IPL), he sustained a fractured finger while playing for Punjab Kings, which led to his withdrawal from the tournament. Subsequently, in September, he suffered a forearm fracture during a net session ahead of Australia’s T20I series against New Zealand, ruling him out of that series as well.

Retirement from ODI Cricket

In June 2025, Maxwell announced his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs) after a 13-year career that included 149 matches and two World Cup victories. He amassed 3,990 runs and took 77 wickets in the format.

Anticipated Impact Against India

Maxwell’s return is timely for Australia, given his impressive T20I record against India. Over 22 matches since 2012, he has scored 574 runs at an average of 31.89 and a strike rate of 152.25. His last bilateral series against India featured a match-winning century in Guwahati in 2023.

Australia’s squad for the upcoming matches also includes left-arm pacer Ben Dwarshuis and uncapped 20-year-old quick Mahli Beardman, who is being considered for a potential debut. Wicketkeeper-batter Josh Philippe retains his place, having served as Maxwell’s injury replacement during the New Zealand series.

The final three T20I matches against India are scheduled to take place in November 2025, with venues in Mumbai, Chennai, and Bangalore. Maxwell’s inclusion is expected to bolster Australia’s middle order and provide additional bowling options as they prepare for the T20 World Cup in 2026.
