IPL 2026 Auction Scheduled for December 16 in Abu Dhabi

IPL 2026 Auction Scheduled for December 16 in Abu Dhabi

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has announced that the 2026 player auction will take place on December 16, 2025, in Abu Dhabi. This marks the third consecutive year the auction is being held overseas, following events in Dubai in 2024 and Jeddah in 2025.

Retention Deadline and Auction Details

Franchises are required to submit their lists of retained and released players by 3:00 PM IST on November 15, 2025. The upcoming auction is categorized as a mini-auction, indicating a single-day event focused on filling specific team needs rather than a complete squad overhaul.

Player Trading Window

The player trading window, which opened after the conclusion of the 2025 season, will remain active until one week before the auction. It will then reopen post-auction and continue until one month prior to the commencement of the 2026 IPL season. Notably, players acquired during the 2026 auction will not be eligible for trading in this window.

Coaching Staff Updates

In preparation for the 2026 season, several franchises have made significant coaching appointments. Former New Zealand captain Tim Southee has been named the bowling coach for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), succeeding Bharat Arun, who has joined Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the same capacity. Additionally, KKR has appointed former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson as assistant coach. LSG has also brought on New Zealand batting legend Kane Williamson as a strategic advisor.

Trade Developments

Among the notable trades, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have acquired Indian wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson from Rajasthan Royals. In exchange, Rajasthan Royals have received all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran. This trade is considered one of the most high-profile player swaps in IPL history.

As the auction date approaches, franchises are strategizing to build competitive squads for the upcoming season, aiming to balance experienced players with emerging talent.
